1. What is MPAAC?

In May 2015, the Executive Board approved a motion to restructure its eight programmatic committees into one overarching committee that will oversee the interest areas formerly represented by the individual committees.  The Members’ Programmatic, Advisory and Advocacy Committee (MPAAC) was established by the Executive Board for the purpose of responding to AAA member needs and interests, with a particular focus on the key areas of 1) ethics; 2) human rights; 3) labor and the work force; 4) public policy; 5) racialized minorities; 6) gender equity; 7) the practicing, applied and public sector; and 8) world anthropologies, as these areas relate to anthropology, anthropologists and the Association.

2. Why did the EB find it necessary to restructure?

Several years ago, the Executive Board (EB) came to realize serious problems with the committee system. In 2013, the EB’s Association Operations Committee (AOC) began working to address those issues. Simply put, the large number of committee members (73) resulted in less efficiency and collaboration. This precluded the many committees' ability to respond as effectively as they had hoped. MPAAC will bring greater effectiveness to AAA governance.

3. How will MPAAC be structured?

Comprised of 23 anthropologists, MPAAC will be AAA’s go-to committee responsible for implementing the Association’s education, advocacy and advisory program. The committee will consist of two subcommittees, one AAA member-focused and the other, public-oriented.

4. What are the guiding principles and values of M-PACC?

The new committee’s main objective is to provide advice and insight to the Executive Board, which, in turn, will enhance the Board’s ability to be responsive to AAA member interests in keeping with the values of collaboration, dialogue, diversity, equity, solidarity, and transparency in relation to the eight key programmatic areas.

5. How will MPAAC prioritize projects for AAA to address?

Specific projects, policy statements, and recommended actions will be prioritized based on the AAA Long Range Plan and its more specific Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP).

6. How and how often will MPAAC report to the EB?

MPAAC will formally report once a year, through the same standard reporting tool that all AAA committees use. These reports are due annually, on January 31.  Additional reports on activities that involve the EB will be as needed. EB liaisons to the two sub-committees will provide an additional channel for communications with the Board.

7. Who will review MPAACs annual report?

AAA’s Operations Committee (AOC) will review the annual report, as they do all other committee reports.  

8. How often will MPAAC meet?

The Committee will meet face-to-face at the Annual Meeting and hold teleconferences as needed.
