Teachers Summer Workshop

Thank you for your interest in the 2022 Summer Teachers Workshop. The 2022 application is now closed.

The Summer Workshop is a professional development opportunity for middle and high school anthropology teachers from around the country. The AAA is seeking applications from teams of two teachers, to include an anthropology teacher and a colleague from a different content area. During the workshop, anthropology teachers and their content-area partner will produce anthropology curriculum materials, such as lesson plans and activities, that are grade level-appropriate and standards-aligned. This work is intended to promote the teaching of anthropology in secondary schools and strengthen networks within K–12 anthropology.

Workshop Format

We are planning a multi-phase, hybrid workshop.  The first phase takes place in late May to early July and is fully online (primarily asynchronous). During this time, participants will hone the anthropology / standards connection from their application and flesh out the theme of their thematic unit. They will be asked to brainstorm existing materials they might use, as well as assignments and classroom activities that they might include or have tried in the past. Collaboration between anthropology teachers and content-area partners will be crucial here as they share materials and approaches with one another and ask mutually relevant questions such as “what does it mean to teach about culture?”

The second phase is an in-person event, held over two and a half days, Thursday 7/21 through Saturday morning 7/23, in Arlington, VA. Attendance of anthropology teachers is expected, and content-area partners are welcome to attend as well; the AAA will pay for round-trip air fare, three hotel room nights, a $500 stipend, and catered meals during the workshop. Anthropology specialists will also be present at the event; the focus over these three days is to do collaborative work on the workshop deliverable, to build networks between anthropology teachers and specialists, and to offer professional development for anthropology teachers.

Participants are expected to use the materials they create in their own classroom at some point during the 2022–23 school year. Asynchronous discussions will continue throughout the school year with the group through a dedicated page created by AAA.

Application

Applications are due Friday, May 13 at 11:59 PM ET. Successful applicants will be notified the week of May 23.
