COVID-19 (coronavirus) Preparedness

As we continue to monitor the developments regarding COVID-19 (coronavirus), our AAA Annual Meeting in St. Louis (18-22 November) is still very much a “go." However, to help preserve every possibility for a successful Annual Meeting, in consultation with Bianca Williams and the Executive Program Committee, we are extending the Call for Paper deadlines. The new Call for Papers deadlines are:

  • Thursday, May 7
    • Deadline to apply for Program Chair Waiver
    • Advance Registration Price Increases
  • Friday, May 15, 3 pm
    • Guest Presenter Registration Date Deadline (formerly Membership Exemption)
    • All General Call for Papers Abstract proposals must be STARTED
  • Wednesday, May 20, 3 pm
    • All General Abstract proposals must be COMPLETE
  • The Call for Special Event IS POSTPONED

Meeting registration and AAA membership is NOT required for all participants at the time of submission.
Participants who are accepted onto the program (announced in late-summer) will be required to register for the meeting and join/renew their membership with the AAA.

As we have noted before, if you register now and decide later not to attend due to COVID-19 concerns, we will refund your conference registration in full. Due to the extraordinary circumstances, we will not charge the usual administrative fee on refunds.

We would like to assure everyone planning to attend the Annual Meeting that your health, safety, and security are a top priority. We will continue to monitor closely updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), and we will pass along all information as soon as we become aware of it. You may have other authoritative information sources you trust, but you can always check on updates regarding the coronavirus with the CDC, or contact our Meetings Department with your questions.

We will also continue to keep you up-to-date through our social media avenues.

  • 2020 AES/APLA Joint Spring Conference attendees who need an official event cancellation notification for refunds on travel may use the Official Cancellation Letter.

Annual Meeting Theme

We are thrilled to announce the theme of the 2020 AAA Annual Meeting to be held in St. Louis, MO: Truth and Responsibility.

“Truth and Responsibility” is a call to reimagine anthropology to meet the demands of the present moment. The imperative to bear witness, take action, and be held accountable to the truths we write and circulate invites us to reflect on our responsibility in reckoning with disciplinary histories, harms, and possibilities. To whom are we giving evidence and toward what ends? For whom are we writing? To whom are we accountable, and in what ways?
