The E. Ohnuki-Tierney Book Award for Historical Anthropology is a bi-annual award. To be considered for this award, a book should be an outstanding example of scholarship that focuses on “culture as historical processes.” The research must take into account an historical period of suitable length that is necessary and sufficient for the project undertaken. The research should be grounded in both ethnographic and historical materials, and shows critical uses of social theory, broadly defined. The recipient will receive a $800 cash award and a certificate. The award will be presented to the recipient at the 2022 AAA Annual Meeting, and is made possible through a gift from Emiko Ohnuki-Tierney.
The nominated work must have been published within the preceding two years by a university press or a well-recognized commercial press.
Please note that the awards committee will require copies of the book for the members to review. The AAA office will reach out to the publisher regarding obtaining physical copies. If the nominator has a digital copy of the book, please upload it to the book information section of the application.
Submission Deadline: This award is biannual and will not be given in 2023.
Questions and concerns should be directed to Meagan Shirley
