Internships
Anthropology Outreach Program, Smithsonian Institution
Our internships offer student-mentor relationships and career-enhancing experiences for undergraduate, graduate and sometimes even high school students. Whether working directly with the public, contributing to the administration and operation of the facilities, or actively engaged in our scientific pursuits, interns gain valuable job skills, unique insight into our operations, and enliven our community!
National Park Service
There are thousands of opportunities for high school, college, and graduate school students to work with the National Park Service. Many of these jobs are filled at the park level but others are advertised and recruited nationally by the National Park Service or in partnership with several national organizations.
The Field Museum
A few salaried internships per year are available for high school students to work directly with collections and research staff at the Museum. Internships are 10 weeks long and are usually taken in the summer.
American Anthropological Association Virtual Internship
Each spring, the American Anthropological Association offers virtual internship opportunities for high school students interested in learning more about anthropological research. Internships are four weeks in length and usually extend from mid-May through mid-June.
Awards and Scholarships
Association for Women in Science
The AWIS Educational Awards Committee offers awards for women pursuing a Bachelors degree in any of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) areas. About 5-10 AWIS undergraduate awards in the amount of $1,000 are given each year. Applicants must be in their sophomore or junior year and must meet the general eligibility requirements. Students in community college should indicate their plans for obtaining a 4-year degree. AWIS may also give Citations of Merit ($500).
National Merit Scholarship Corporation
The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)–a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year–and by meeting published program entry/participation.

Field Schools
Crow Canyon
Crow Canyon's High School Field School takes place in the middle of the richest archaeological region in the United States. Students spend three weeks learning about the science of archaeology and the ancestral Pueblo Indians who inhabited the region hundreds of year ago.
Passport in Time
Passport in Time (PIT) is a volunteer archaeology and historic preservation program of the USDA Forest Service (FS). PIT volunteers work with professional FS archaeologists and historians on national forests throughout the U.S. on such diverse activities as archaeological survey and excavation, rock art restoration, survey, archival research, historic structure restoration, oral history gathering, and analysis and curation of artifacts.
