It took less than 90 days after President Trump signed a proclamation drastically reducing Bears Ears National Monument for scientists to discover one of the world's richest troves of Triassic-period fossils in an unprotected area of the park. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as Bears Ears represents the country’s most significant cultural landscape, with more than 100,000 archaeological sites spread across 1.3 million acres of land.

The American Anthropological Association renews its call for the Administration to once again recognize the recreational, preservation, and economic benefits of our national monuments and respect the cultural heritage and spiritual traditions these lands offer.
