AAA Announces Akhil Gupta as President-Elect/Vice President

The American Anthropological Association (AAA) is pleased to announce that Dr. Akhil Gupta (University of California, Los Angeles) has been selected to serve as president-elect/vice president. Dr. Gupta will begin his term at AAA’s Annual Meeting in November after Alex Barker assumes his role as president.

“Akhil has a wonderful history of service to the Association and to the discipline,” said outgoing AAA President Alisse Waterston. “We are fortunate to welcome him to the executive board in this important leadership role.”

Dr. Gupta is director of the Center for South Asian Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. He served a three-year term on the AAA’s Nominations Committee and has also served the Association as treasurer for the American Ethnological Society. Dr. Gupta brings with him years of experience highlighting the voices of minorities in anthropology and hopes to use the Association’s full convening power to facilitate a larger public role for anthropology.
