Florida State safety Myron Rolle, projected as a first round NFL draft pick for 2009, has received a Rhodes Scholarship to study medical anthropology. He plans to complete a one-year master’s at Oxford before participating in the 2010 NFL draft.
Prior to receiving the scholarship, Rolle received plenty of media attention when he risked missing all or part of a critical game at the University of Maryland-College Park on November 22 to have his final interview for the scholarship in Birmingham, Alabama. Rolle completed the interview, then found out he had received the scholarship. He was given a police escort to a local airport and a private plane took him to the game, which he entered late in the second quarter. The Florida State Seminoles won, 37-3.
Rolle graduated from Florida State University in 2½ years with a pre-med degree. He hopes to play for the NFL after attending Oxford, and is also considering attending medical school after receiving his medical anthropology degree. Rolle is of Bahamian descent and hopes to use his education to support health services in the Bahamas.
