As part of this year’s 2022 AAA Annual Meeting, several members managed the formidable (and rather intimidating) task of explaining their theses in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience – and in just 180 seconds! This year’s submissions were clear and concise covering a number of complex issues ranging from augmented digital realities to witches and whale watching.
The grand prize ($400) went to Jake Dean for “Cesando la Sal: A Political Ecology of Whale-Watching & Conservation in El Vizcaíno.” First runner up ($200) went to William Lucas for “They're still trying to wrap their heads around forever: Structures of Hope for Spinal Cord Injury Patients.” The second runner up ($100) went to Nathan Chapman for “A Matrix of Coloniality: Narratives of ‘Frame Case’ in Trinidad and Tobago.”
Judges for the Three Minute Thesis competition, sponsored by the National Institute of Social Sciences, hailed from top media outlets, including NPR and Science Magazine.
